The Finish Line

After an enforced move to a new venue at the magnificent setting of Expo City Dubai, runners of all ages and abilities made it to the finish line of the Marathon, 10km and 4km runs – we caught up with a few of them to share the moment…

The 2023 Dubai Marathon… in 60 seconds!

After a change of venue forced organisers to come up with a new route for the Middle East’s oldest international road marathon, the 2023 Dubai Marathon got underway from Expo City Dubai. And it turned out to be a family affair for brother and sister-in-law Abdisa Tola and Dera Dida, while Eden Rainbow-Cooper and Marcel Hug enjoyed success in the wheelchair division.

Eden Ready For Dubai Debut

Commonwealth Games Silver Medalist and Great North Run champion Eden Rainbow-Cooper arrived in Dubai ready for her debut at the Dubai Marathon . The 21-year-old is a prodigious talent who trains twice a day, six days a week to be among the very best in her sport.

Giving Back Through YallaGive

Sixteen international and local charities are set to get a welcome boost from this week’s Dubai Marathon thanks to a special partnership between the popular race and its Official Fundraising Partner YallaGive. The new initiative allows any runner competing in the Dubai Marathon on Sunday (February 12) to raise funds for any of the 16 charities by joining or creating their own campaign.

Marathon Memories – Dubai Marathon 2011

The 2011 Dubai Marathon continued its growth with a share of the spoils between the two powerhouses Kenya and Ethiopia. In the men’s race, Kenyan David Barmasai took the tape by almost a minute in 2:07:18, while in the women’s event Aselefech Mergia of Ethiopia won the first of her three Dubai titles in 2:22:45. Registration for the 2023 Dubai Marathon – being staged on February 12 – will continue until February 11 at dubaimarathon.org

The 2009 Dubai Marathon saw a second successive victory for Haile Gebrselassie as the Ethiopian saw off a talented field – and a remarkable Dubai downpour. Equally adept in the wet and cool conditions was Ethiopia’s Bezunesh Bekele who won the women’s race.

2008 saw the start of the ‘Haile Years’ at the Dubai Marathon. The mercurial Ethiopian Gebrselassie drew huge crowds as he battled to better his own world record, narrowly missing out and running what was at the time the second fastest Marathon in history (2.04.53). Birhane Adere made it a double for Ethiopia.

In 2007, Kenya and Ethiopia shared the spoils with victory in the men’s marathon going to Kenyan Willy Rotich, while the women’s event saw victory go to Ethiopian athlete Askale Magarsa. By this stage, the number of Dubai-based runners continued to climb as the race made its mark on the international calendar.
